America expects free and fair elections in Bangladesh. The upcoming polls will be closely watched. However, the US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that there is no comment on the next steps.

Meanwhile, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and recipient of the US Presidential Medal of Freedom. Regarding Muhammad Yunus’ sentence, the US official said, ‘We have closely monitored the case against him.’

Matthew Miller made this comment at the US State Department’s regular press conference on Wednesday.

The current Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has announced a dummy candidate for the upcoming elections. Will the US government legalize such a dummy election? If not, will the Biden administration consider taking any punitive action against the proposed regime?

In response to a journalist’s question, the spokesperson of the country’s foreign ministry, Matthew Miller, said, ‘It has been said several times, and I will say it again in the new year, that America expects free and fair elections in Bangladesh. The upcoming polls in Bangladesh will be closely watched. But now it is not a comment about what steps will be taken next, what will not be taken.’

We have closely monitored the case against him. We certainly also saw massive international criticism after the verdict. On our part, we encourage the Government of Bangladesh to ensure a fair and transparent legal process and we will closely monitor any further developments in this regard.’
