Wayne Griffiths: “We must improve taxation of electric cars and increase charging infrastructure”

The top executive of Seat, and at the same time, president of the manufacturers’ association, Anfac, was especially concerned about the delay that Spain is accumulating in the electrification processes of the automobile fleet. While the companies have made the necessary investments, the Administration is very late, which in the medium term could harm the companies’ investments and the maintenance of jobs in the Spanish motor industry. To correct this imbalance, Wayne Griffiths called for more favorable taxation for electric cars and an urgent increase in the number of charging points.

He highlighted that the Volkswagen group, of which Seat is a part, has already carried out a transformation of the company towards electrification, carrying out investments in Spain of more than 10,000 million euros. He pointed out that “we are leading the manufacturing of electric cars, both Volkswagen, Seat and Cupra and we are investing in a new assembly line for electric cars at the Martorell factory, and we are also transforming the Navarrese Landaben factory. In addition, the battery assembly factory will provide 400 jobs and produce materials for half a million cars.

Griffiths was concerned about the current lack of political stability and statements that create consumer confusion. “Spain must work on this industrial future and we need stability for our investments and for more electrified cars to be sold. Because the European average for electrified cars is 22% of sales, while in Spain this proportion only reaches 12%, and only half are pure electric. And we have started but this year. “We are risking our future.”

The president of Anfac highlighted that manufacturers “are prepared, but the market is not and this is the problem. The electric vehicle is part of the solution and for this it is necessary to improve the taxation of electric cars and increase the charging infrastructure. “We are waiting for proposals for the new Moves Plan. We have lost two years and we must accelerate now. Well, investments and jobs are pending and we have to take it seriously,” he concluded.
