The police have arrested the former UP chairman, a boat worker, in a case filed against the supporters of Jannatul Ferdous Ara Jhuma, an independent candidate for Netrakona-1 (Kalmakanda-Durgapur) seat. On Monday morning, the police arrested him from his house in Seichahani village of the upazila.
Former Chairman of Nazirpur Union Parishad of Kalmakanda Upazila Abdul Qudduch Babul was arrested.
It has been reported that the attack took place on Jhuma’s supporters on their way home after election campaigning in Chowrastha area of Chakpara Bazar of Nazirpur Union around 2.30 am on Sunday. 7 injured people have been admitted to Durgapur Upazila Health Complex. Later in the morning, Jhuma filed a case in Kalmakanda Police Station against 20 unknown people along with 6 names.
According to the statement of the case, the supporters of Jhuma, an independent candidate, were attacked with iron rods and native weapons on the orders of the former chairman Babul in the intersection area of Chakpara Bazar of Nazirpur Union of Kalmakanda Upazila. At that time, the motorcycle was vandalized and seriously injured.
However, boat candidate Mostak Ahmed Ruhi denied the attack and told the media that independent candidate Jhuma is making these allegations out of jealousy of his popularity.
In this regard, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kalmakanda police station Mohammad Lutful Haque said, ‘The main accused of the case, Abdul Quduch Babul, has been arrested. The process of sending him to court is underway. An operation is underway to arrest the rest of the accused involved in the incident.
