US forces attacked Iran-backed armed fighters in Iraq. On Wednesday, the country’s defense secretary, Lloyd Austin, said that their forces had attacked three facilities in Iraq used by armed fighters supported by Iran. This information is known in a BBC report.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the strikes targeted the Kataib Hezbollah militia group and other Iranian-backed armed groups. The attack was a “direct response” to attacks on US and allied forces in Iraq and Syria.
Earlier last week, several US servicemen were injured in a missile attack by armed fighters on an airbase in western Iraq. The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said at the time that an Iranian-backed armed group had launched ballistic missiles and rocket attacks targeting al-Assad Air Base. US troops were stationed at that base.
A group known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack. According to data from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the Islamic Resistance group debuted in late 2023. It is composed of several armed groups linked to Iran. Its fighters operate in Iraq. The group has also claimed responsibility for other attacks on US forces in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Lloyd Austin praised the professionalism of US military personnel in planning and conducting the latest attacks in Iraq. The attacks were carried out as part of efforts to further destroy and contain the Islamic State group in the Middle East.
