Urge formation of task force to monitor irregularities in restaurant industry

Going to restaurants is one of the pastimes of city dwellers. On that occasion, numerous restaurants have been built all over the capital. But there are questions about how safe these places are. That suspicion was reinforced after the fire in Bailey Road. Analysts have urged the formation of a separate task force to monitor irregularities in the restaurant industry. The owner association also wants everyone to be held accountable.

According to the government, there are about 4.5 lakh small and big restaurants in the country. It has doubled in the last 15 years. Two crore people are directly and indirectly involved in this sector. But are restaurants safe? The question came up again after 46 people died in a fire at the Green Cozy Cottage building on Bailey Road last Thursday.

According to the related sources, about 4000 hotels and restaurants in the capital do not have fire extinguishers. Most of the restaurants also have narrow walkways. Cylinder gas is used but not properly maintained. The restaurant owner association complains that there are no regulations in this industry, many are operating without registration.

Secretary General of the Restaurant Owners Association Imran Hasan told Independent Television that all the restaurants in Bangladesh should get the certificate of the Owners Association. Let them do business with the certificate. The government imposes a tax through the owners association to bring all the restaurants under one roof and so that we can provide a nice and safe environment.

Experts say, besides the quality of restaurant food, the environment should also be looked at. Action should also be taken against dishonest traders.

Former Director General of Fire Service Abu Naeem. Shahidullah said, an owner association like FBCCI, they themselves have created a safety council. And they also stand by the owners, how to overcome this problem. Every department has to implement its own laws to get its benefits.

Experts have urged to monitor restaurants throughout the year instead of conducting raids only when accidents occur.
