A trawler drowned due to the impact of a bulkhead named Dakshin Dashtani in the Padma branch river of Munshiganj’s Tongibari upazila. In this incident, two bodies including a child were recovered from the trawler. However, it is not yet known how many people are missing in this incident.
The incident took place during the trawler’s crossing of the Padma river in the Hasail area of the upazila at around 6:30 a.m. today.
According to Upazila Health Complex sources, Shifa (15) daughter of Nazrul Bepari of Mandra village of the upazila and Faizer (6) daughter of Faruk Hossain of Narayanganj Fatulla area died in the sinking of the trawler.
Eyewitness Hafez Mridha said that the trawler took 35-40 passengers from Hasail’s Mia Bari Ghat to Hasail Bazar and took them on a bulkhead trawler going to Lauhjong in the middle of the river. In this, all the passengers in the trawler including the trawler drowned in the water and two people including children died. However, several people are missing in this incident.
Meanwhile, after the incident, the locals along with the fire service worked to rescue the missing people. As the rescue operation was not possible late at night, the fire service has completed the rescue work today. However, the rescue work will be started tomorrow morning, the fire service said.
The officer in charge of Tongibari police station confirmed the matter. Rajib Khan said, ‘The pushed bulkhead has been seized. However, the driver could not be arrested. This incident happened in the evening. Two bodies have been recovered so far. However, it is not yet known how many people are missing.
Upazila executive officer. Aslam Hossain said, ‘two people died in the sinking of the trawler. The bulkhead is seized. The driver is absconding. Efforts are underway to arrest them.’
