Three workers of independent candidate jailed for buying votes in Badalgashi

A mobile court has sentenced three workers and supporters of Chalim Uddin Tarafdar Salim MP, an independent candidate of truck symbol in Naogaon-3 (Mahadevpur-Badalgachi) constituency, to 15 days imprisonment without labor for buying votes with money. At around 8:30 pm on Saturday night, local people arrested them while buying votes at a place called Chakrail Nimatoli Mor of the upazila.

When the incident was reported to the concerned, police and upazila administration personnel appeared there. At that time, 15 thousand cash was found with them. Later that night they were sentenced to 15 days in prison by a mobile court. Mobile Court Judge Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Lands) Mosa. Atiya Khatun was sentenced to 15 days in prison for the bribery offense of 1860 for accepting bribes on the occasion of elections.

Officer in charge (Investigation) of police station Mahbub Alam and other officers were present at the time.

Those sentenced to prison are – Md. son of deceased Mofiz Mandal of Bilashbari Union of Upazila. Phulbar (53), son of deceased Yachin Ali of Bhagbanpur village, Night Guard of Badalgachi Agricultural Office. Swadhin Hossain (43) and the son of the deceased Maqbul of the same union, Deepganj Hullud Vihar area. Manju (54). Locals said that they are all supporters of independent candidate Chalim Uddin Tarafdar.

According to local sources, there was a fear that votes could be bought in exchange for money the night before the polls. In the evening money was exchanged at Abdus Salam Chairman’s house. The convicts took money from the chairman’s house and went to a place called Chakrail Nimtali Mor and distributed the money.

When asked about this, former chairman Abdus Salam said on the phone, ‘There is no question of taking money from my house. It is completely false and baseless.’

Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Lands) Mosa. Atia Khatun confirmed the matter and said on the phone, ‘Tk 15,000 in cash has been recovered from the convicts. Those three have been sentenced to 15 days in prison without labor for accepting bribes on the occasion of elections.

Meanwhile, District Commissioner and District Returning Officer Golam Mawla said in writing to the media at around 11:00 pm that at 8:30 pm in Badalgachi Upazila, three workers of independent candidate Chalim Uddin Tarafdar (Truck Marka) were arrested by local people while giving cash to the voters. When informed, Aceland went and got them with money. They admitted the guilt during the interrogation. Later, they were sentenced to 15 days in jail for violating the electoral code of conduct by a mobile court and the forfeiture of Tk 15,000 will be deposited in the government treasury.
