Myanmar’s junta forces have begun to lose bases one by one to the rebels. In the meantime, the junta tried to take over the town of Sewi Piay in Homalin, known as a gold mining area. But failed and stopped the campaign.
Earlier, the city fell to the People’s Defense Forces (PDFS) in November last year after prolonged fighting. According to media Irrawaddy, 400 junta troops launched an operation to retake the city. They came back unsuccessfully last Saturday. Many were killed.
Earlier, on January 26, the junta tried to recapture this city. At that time many local forces who were in favor of the government joined them. But still could not take possession.
The junta has used fighter jets and Mi-2 helicopters in this mission. But PDF has given a strong response. The rebels surrounded the junta. Cut off supply of water, food and weapons. This reduces the power of the mission. Seven soldiers died.
However, the Irrawaddy media could not confirm the number of casualties.
Myanmar’s rebel groups are gradually attacking the junta forces. In the last three days, the rebels have captured many important military bases of the junta forces. And 62 Junta soldiers were killed in this fight. The junta government has been disoriented by attacks by the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) and other armed groups.
In the past three days, there have been massive clashes in Sagaing, Magwe and Mandalay regions and Kachin and Karen states. According to Irrawaddy media, despite many attempts, the junta forces could not recapture Sagaing town from the PDF forces.
Myanmar’s junta government is under constant pressure from insurgent attacks in various states. Min Aung Hlaing’s junta has lost control of large swathes of the northwest to rebels. They are retreating in the attack of Arakan Army on the western border.
Three years ago, on February 1, 2021, junta forces overthrew the democratically elected party of Aung San Suu Kyi in a military coup. After that there was mass protest against the coup in the country.
And recently, the armed rebel groups have taken over several areas of the country after defeating the military. In addition, hundreds of thousands of soldiers left the country’s army amid the fighting. The junta government is in a lot of trouble.
The length of Bangladesh’s border with Myanmar is about 283 km. Major part of it fell in Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar districts. Several rebel groups, including the Arakan Army, have intensified fighting in the Bangladesh border area for weeks. And because of this, panic is increasing in Tambru border. Due to this conflict, BGB is on alert in the border area.
Among them, a Bangladeshi and a Rohingya were killed on the Ghumdhum border by a shell fired from Myanmar on Monday.
Cornered in fighting with the Arakan Army, 117 members of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) have so far fled across the Tumbru border and taken refuge in Bangladesh. In the meantime, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have disarmed them and taken them into custody.
Locals have closed all the shops in the border markets due to fear. Many have left the area and gone to safe shelters. Those who remain spend their days in fear.
