The Palestinian national team footballers left the country to participate in the Asian Cup, promising victory to the war-torn people. They didn’t stop at just making promises. Musab Al Battara has won the Asian Cup for the first time in the country’s history.

Ode Dabagh scored twice in their last group match in Qatar to beat Hong Kong 3-0 to reach the knockout stage for the first time.

More than 25,000 people have lost their lives in Israel’s attack on Gaza, Palestine. Children and women are more among them. Many of the people of the war-torn country have somehow managed to survive. In such a terrible situation, this historic victory of Palestine will bring some joy to the people of the country. The country’s captain Musab thinks so.

Whenever Palestine played in this year’s Asian Cup, it received unwavering support from the fans present in the field. Yesterday’s match against Hong Kong was no exception. Almost all of the 6,568 in the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium cheered for the Middle Eastern nation.

Palestinian footballers have also been encouraged by receiving such support from the gallery. The proof of this is found in the field game. Macrame Dabaub’s disciples gave Hong Kong no chance throughout the match.

Palestine kept the ball at their feet for 68 percent of the match. Hong Kong took 19 shots on goal. 3 out of 7 shots on target were successful. Dabagh opened the scoring in 12 minutes of the match. There were no more goals in the first half.

Zayed Kunbar doubled the lead for Palestine within three minutes of the second half. Dabagh put the final nail in Hong Kong’s coffin in the 60th minute of the match. The scoreline could have been bigger had Hong Kong goalkeeper K Wing Se not stood in the way.

In this victory, Palestine became the third in ‘C’ group with four points in three matches. Second-placed United Arab Emirates also have four points. However, the country is ahead in goal difference. Iran is at the top of Group C with nine points from three matches.

The six-group tournament will see the top two teams from each group play in the knockout stages. But Palestine has no reason to despair. The top four teams from the third place in each group will also qualify for the last sixteen. Dabaur’s disciples advanced to the knock-out phase as one of the top four in third place.

Before the match, the crowd at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium chanted ‘Free Palestine’. As soon as the final whistle of the match in Doha was played, they went down to the field and celebrated with the players by flying the national flag of Palestine. The country’s captain Musab said after the match that they have kept their promise to the people of Palestine.

Musab said, ‘Thank you to all those who are supporting us. Inside or outside Palestine… we have been able to bring smiles to the faces of those who are supporting us, following us.’
