The United States once again clarified its position on the issue of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. In a regular press briefing at the US State Department on Tuesday (December 5), spokesman Matthew Miller said that the US wants free and fair elections in Bangladesh.

The Election Commission has announced the schedule for holding the 12th National Assembly elections in Bangladesh on January 7. The United States has been showing great interest in Bangladesh’s national elections for several months. Questions and answers about various issues of the upcoming elections are often held in the regular briefing of the US State Department.

The issue of Bangladesh elections came up in the regular press briefing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday. At this time, the United States made its position clear again. Spokesman Matthew Miller said, ‘We want to see a free and fair election in Bangladesh and that policy will continue. This policy will be at the center of the United States’ engagement with the government of Bangladesh.

However, the US State Department is reluctant to talk about anything other than the Bangladesh election issue. The representative of the Times asked about the report on ‘terrorism’ published by the United States on this day.

According to the 2022 US Counter-Terrorism Report, the Bangladesh government is actively fighting militancy with the help of the US. It has reduced terrorist incidents in Bangladesh. However, the resurgence of militant groups is feared due to election-related political violence. What is the position of the United States in this regard and whether they have any plans to work with the government of Bangladesh?

However, spokesman Miller avoided answering the question. He said, “The United States published an anti-terrorism report a few days ago. There is no comment beyond what is said in this report.

The US State Department’s annual report on terrorism ‘Country Reports on Terrorism-2022’ was published last Friday (December 1). The Bangladesh section of the report says that terrorism has decreased in the country in 2022 as the Bangladesh government continues to strictly suppress militancy.

The report also says that US-trained Bangladeshi policemen announced an operation last October to eliminate Jamaatul Ansar Phil Hindal Sharqiya. Dozens of suspected terrorists have been arrested. RAB conducted an operation in the training center of Ansar Phil Hindal Sharqiya in Chittagong Hill Tracts in collaboration with the Kuki-Chin National Front.

According to the report, Bangladesh and the United States have a cooperative relationship in strengthening internal security and fighting terrorism. The US government provides support to the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and the Anti-Terrorism Unit of the Bangladesh Police and other police units across the country.
