The poor are more in Barisal, less in Khulna

About 1/5th of the total population of the country is poor. Among them, poverty rate is highest in Barisal 26.9 percent, and lowest in Khulna division 14.8 percent. Besides, the average income of the people of the country has almost doubled in the last 6 years. Currently the average monthly income is 7 thousand 614 taka. Which in 2016 was 3 thousand 940 taka.

This information has emerged in the final report of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics-BBS Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2022. Until now, people had the idea that poverty is high in North Bengal, this report of BBS has changed.

According to the report published by BBS, the poverty rate in Barisal division is 26.9. And least in Khulna division. The poverty rate in this section is 14.8. And the overall poverty rate of the country is 18.7. Six years ago, i.e. in 2016, the poverty rate was 24.3. The extreme poverty rate in the country is 5.6, which was 12.9 six years ago.

Apart from this, the poverty rate is 17.9 in Dhaka, 15.8 in Chittagong, 16.7 in Rajshahi, 17.4 in Sylhet, 24.8 in Rangpur and 24.2 in Mymensingh.

The report also shows that the income of urban people is much higher than that of rural people. Average monthly income of city people is 10 thousand 951 taka. On the other hand, the income of the village people is 6 thousand 91 taka.

The average income of family earners is 25 thousand 707 taka. 6 years ago which was 13 thousand 646 taka. At the same time, wealth has become more concentrated among the rich. BBS survey shows that income inequality is more pronounced.

About 41 percent of the country’s total income goes to the richest 10 percent of the country. However, the income share of the poorest 10 percent of people increased slightly to 1.31 percent. Yet income inequality has increased.
