  • The OECD provided the latest economic insight into Slovakia, both into the past and into the future.
  • The organization recommends reforms in education, in the green transformation, in the labor market and in the housing sector.
  • Prime Minister Robert Fico revealed Slovakia’s plans at a meeting with OECD head Mathias Cormann.
  • He pointed out that there are two social democratic parties in his government. The cabinet has plans for apartments and energy.

In the past, Slovakia was nicknamed the “Tatra Tiger”. We earned the designation for the rapid growth of the economy after 2000, which also reached double-digit values.

After joining the EU and after privatization, large investors came to us in the fields of telecom, electronics and car manufacturing. But the inflow of capital slowed down and social packages increased, which improved people’s financial situation, but burdened public finances. The subsequent pandemic, which was followed by the energy and inflation crisis, halted the country’s progress.

The Czech Republic lags behind the least

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has also recently drawn attention to these aspects in its economic overview of Slovakia. “The process of economic convergence, which slowed down after the global financial crisis, has stopped since the pandemic,” the institution emphasized.
