In the twelfth parliamentary elections, his three brothers and sisters are competing against each other in the seat of late Syed Ashraf in Kishoreganj district. The fact that a sister boat and two brothers are independent candidates in the same seat in the same family is now a topic of discussion for people of all classes and professions in the district. The matter is embarrassing, says the district Awami League president. But the voters say that they will choose the qualified candidate.

Late Syed Ashraful Islam, son of Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam, was a Member of Parliament for five consecutive terms in Kishoreganj-1 Constituency. After his death, his younger sister Syeda Zakia Noor Lipi was elected Member of Parliament in the by-election on 28 February 2019. He has also become the candidate of Awami League in the 12th parliamentary elections.

Not getting nomination from Awami League, his elder brother Syed Safayetul Islam and cousin District Awami League Joint General Secretary Syed Ashfaqul Islam Titu stood as independent candidates. Discussion-criticism has started with three candidates from the same family in the same seat.

A local resident says, ‘Three brothers and sisters of Syed Ashraf Bhai’s family are candidates for Kishoreganj headquarters. Now we are very much in dilemma as voters of Sadar.’

Another local says, ‘As a follower of Ashraf Bhai, to whom the honorable Prime Minister has raised the boat, we will all vote for him on January 7.’

Meanwhile, the cousin of the member of parliament who became an independent candidate said that the context of this year’s election is completely different due to the central directive. People will vote for whomever they deem fit, no family matters.

Independent candidate of Kishoreganj-1 constituency Syed Ashfaqul Islam Titu said, ‘Since it is an ideological fight and a fight for people’s votes, if they are qualified people will look at them. And if I am qualified, the people, including the leaders and workers, will look at me. There is no family matter there.’

The local Awami League is in an embarrassing situation with three candidates from the same family.

Kishoreganj District Awami League President Zillur Rahman said, ‘It will not be possible for me to go beyond the party symbol. General staff can go, but those who hold office should stay in favor of the boat. Our message to them is that those who hold office-holding party posts should at least not go against the boat.’

Apart from three members of the Syed family, eight people, including Jatiya Party candidates, will contest the election in this seat.
