Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government first declared a state of emergency in March 2016, when mass migration was the cause. Even in that case, it was extended multiple times.

At Wednesday’s parliamentary session, the Hungarian government submitted a proposal to further extend the state of emergency declared due to the Russian-Ukrainian war for another 180 days. Referring to the blikk.hu server, the TASR correspondent in Budapest informs about it.

The State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Róbert Répássy, stated in the justification of the proposal that the government, with its draft amendment to the 2022 law on preventing and managing the consequences of an armed conflict in a neighboring country or a humanitarian disaster in Hungary, is asking the legislature to extend the duration of the state of emergency declared on November 1, 2022.

The current state of emergency applies until May 23.
