In the last 15 years, the movable wealth of Health Minister and Member of Parliament for Manikganj-3 Zahid Malek has increased more than 10 times. Besides, the income has increased 11 and a half times. And currently he does not have any electronics. This information has been revealed in the analysis of the affidavits of the 12th National Parliament elections.
According to the information obtained from the 12th National Parliament election affidavit and the 2008 Ninth National Parliament election affidavit, Zahid Malek’s movable assets have increased 10.37 times in the last 15 years.
In the affidavit of the 12th National Assembly election, Zahid Malek mentioned that he has 64 lakh 11 thousand 835 taka in cash, 67 thousand 996.62 US dollars in foreign currency, which is 75 lakh 13 thousand 347 taka in Bangladeshi taka.
Deposits in banks and financial institutions are 15 crore 57 lakh 99 thousand 468 taka, bonds and debentures, shares of companies not listed in the stock exchange with remaining business capital, 49 crore 47 lakh 72 thousand 56 taka with personal business capital, 2 crore 24 lakh 86 thousand for vehicles. 477 Taka, furniture 70 thousand and other 1 crore 63 lakh 13 thousand 478 Taka, total financial value of his movable assets is 70 crore 33 lakh 66 thousand 661 Taka. Which according to the information of the affidavit of 2008 national parliament election was 6 crore 78 lakh 53 thousand 57 taka. According to this, in the last 15 years, the financial value of the health minister’s movable assets has increased by Tk 63 crore 55 lakh 13 thousand 604.
Analyzing the affidavits of the 12th National Assembly elections, it has been found that the annual income of the Health Minister from house, apartment or shop or other rent, business, plot, agro farm, shares, savings certificates or bank deposits, dividends and other (honorary allowances of members of parliament) is currently 8 crores 29 Lakh 97 thousand 25 taka. Which was 71 lakh 34 thousand 691 taka in the affidavit of 2008 national parliament election. As a result, his annual income increased by 7 crore 58 lakh 62 thousand 334 taka in the last 15 years. In other words, his annual income has increased 11.63 times in the last 15 years from being a member of parliament to a state minister and then serving as a minister.
In the affidavit, the health minister mentioned that he does not have any electronic equipment. However, according to the information in the affidavit submitted in the 2008 parliamentary elections, he had electronics worth Tk 1 lakh. However, according to the information in the affidavit submitted in the 2014 and 2018 National Assembly elections, he did not have any electronic equipment.
According to the affidavit, the immovable property of Zahid Malek is immutable. According to the information in the affidavit submitted in the 2008 National Assembly elections, the amount of non-agricultural land in the name of Zahid Malek was 2.5 kathas and a plot of 2.5 kathas in the name of his wife Sabana Malek. In addition, there was an 11-storey residential or commercial building and house of the Health Minister on 53.4 acres of land. The financial value of which was 3 crore 61 lakh 6 thousand 22 taka. Besides, there was 40 bigha of agricultural land under joint ownership. Now the amount of these immovable assets remains unchanged. However, the land of 2.5 acres in the name of the wife has been transferred in the name of dependents. The affidavit mentions that 40 bighas of jointly owned agricultural land is now in the name of dependents.
This time Zahid Malek Health Minister has mentioned as profession in the affidavit. And in the affidavit in 2008, the chairman of these two organizations mentioned ‘business’ and Sunlife Insurance Company Limited and Bangladesh Thai Aluminum Limited. There is no case against Zahid Malek who passed his post graduation.
According to the affidavit, the health minister’s debt has increased. Health Minister Zahid Malek has a loan of Tk 1 crore 73 lakh 77 thousand 79 to Mercantile Bank Limited and South Bangla Agriculture and Commerce Bank Limited. According to the affidavit submitted in the 2008 national election, the loan amount was 23 lakh 53 thousand 280 taka. That is, in the last 15 years, the health minister has a debt or liability of Tk 1 crore 50 lakh 23 thousand 799.
While the assets of many ministers or MPs’ wives have increased over the past fifteen years, the marginal movable assets of Shabana Malek, wife of the health minister, have decreased. In 2008, the health minister’s wife had bonds worth Tk 39,86,300. It is not mentioned in this affidavit. However, in 15 years, Sabana Malek’s gold has increased by 5 times. In other words, the price of 5 bars of gold at the current market rate is about 5 lakh taka. Accordingly, in the last 15 years, the health minister’s wife’s movable property has decreased by about 34 lakh 86 thousand taka. But in 2008, the health minister’s dependents had 25 bhars of gold, but this year’s affidavit does not mention it. That is, the amount of gold of independents has decreased.
Citizens for Good Governance (Sujan) Manikganj District Vice President Iqbal Hossain Kochi said, ‘There is no match between the affidavit submitted by the candidates to the Election Commission and the actual information. I think the information in the affidavit is not true. The Returning Officer seems to be calm about these issues. It is also not understandable why they are not asking the candidates about this.’
Nine candidates including Awami League nominated candidate Zahid Malek submitted their nomination papers to Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Rehena Akhtar in Manikganj-3 constituency in the 12th National Assembly elections. After verification, the district returning officer announced the cancellation of the nomination papers of two candidates. Seven people including the health minister will participate in the election in this seat.
Manikganj-3 parliamentary seat consists of seven unions of Manikganj Sadar Upazila, Manikganj Municipality and Saturia Upazila. In 2008, 2014, 2018 and this year’s 12th National Parliament election, Zahid Malek will be elected from Awami League for four consecutive times in the boat symbol. However, in the 2008 Ninth National Assembly election, he contested with the candidate of BNP’s rice grain symbol and won for the first time and was elected as a Member of Parliament. After winning the 10th National Parliament election in 2014, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the second time and was given the responsibility of State Minister of Health. After winning the 2018 11th National Parliament election, Zahid Malek was elected as a Member of Parliament for the third time in a row and became the Minister of Health from State Minister of Health.
