The failure of a valve causes the automatic shutdown of the reactor of the Ascó I nuclear power plant

The owner of the Ascó I nuclear power plant (Tarragona) last night notified the automatic shutdown of the reactor due to the action of the protection system, which has been activated due to a signal of very low water level in the steam generator C. The licensee has identified that the low level in the steam generator has occurred due to the unforeseen closure of its feedwater control valve. The control valves of the other two generators performed correctly. The owner is analyzing the causes of the valve failure. The event does not has had an impact on the safety of the facility, people or the environment.

All security systems have acted according toare design and the plant is stable. With the information available up to this moment, it is classified as level 0 in the International Nuclear and Radiological Events Scale (INES). EThis notification to the CSN has been made following the established procedure and following the guidelines included in the Council Instruction IS-10. The Council has informed through its website of the receipt of notification of this event.
