The court has rejected the remand and bail plea of Syed Ashfaqul Haque, executive editor of the English daily Daily Star, and his wife Tanya Khandkar in the case of ‘negligent death’ of the domestic worker. They have been ordered to be interrogated at the jail gate within the next three days.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Hasibul Haque gave this order after the court hearing on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case Mohammadpur police outpost in-charge sub-inspector Nazmul Hasan brought the accused to the court and applied for a 5-day remand.
On behalf of the accused, their lawyer Chaitanya Chandra Halder, applied for bail seeking cancellation of remand. The state opposes it. After the hearing of both parties, the court gave this order.
Last Tuesday, a teenage domestic worker died after falling from the ninth floor of a residential building in Mohammadpur of the capital. The 15-year-old girl named Preeti Oran used to work at the residence of Syed Ashfaqul Haque, a resident of that building.
The case was filed against Syed Ashfaqul Haque and his wife Tanya Khandkar this morning by Lukesh Oran, the father of housekeeper Preeti. 304(a) has been alleged in the case for causing death due to negligence.
