The Indian tectonic plate under the Tibetan Plateau is splitting into two. As a result, a terrible earthquake can hit India at any time. This information was reported by the Indian media India Today citing a study by Chinese researchers.
Recently, this research paper was presented at the American Geophysical Union Conference in San Francisco, USA. It said the new seismic data revealed new insights into the structure of the vast Himalayan mountain range.
Researchers say the Indian plate is breaking apart. Because of this, the whole Tibet can break into two parts at any time due to the tremors. At that time, the earthquake that will occur in the vast area of India, its magnitude may be close to 8 on the Richter scale.
A research team led by Lin Liu, a geophysicist at Ocean University in China, developed a model of these vibrations of tectonic plates. They say, we have known for so long that the Indian plate under Tibet is subducting under the Eurasian plate. But the new study shows that the Indian plate is not only subducting under the Eurasian plate, but the upper part of the Indian plate is colliding violently. Due to this, the entire Indian plate is bending and splitting.
“We used data from 94 broadband seismic stations in Tibet to create a picture of the motion of the subsurface plates,” said researcher Lin Liu. Earlier, we analyzed seismic waves in the region where two plates collide. I then used those waves to create the current map of the Indian plate.
