A banana stick is about 7 feet long. There are thousands of bananas in the stick. Recently, this stick has grown on a banana tree in Manpura Park located in Latifpur area under Kashimpur Police Station of Gazipur City Corporation. Visitors to the park are increasing to see these amazing banana trees and sticks.
According to the park authorities, two years ago, a visitor came to Manpura Park and gave a banana plant as a gift. The banana sapling is planted inside the park itself. At one time the seedling grew up and bore bananas. That stick is quite big. Later, a new banana plant was born from there. After the new seedling has grown into a full plant, the banana shoots emerge before the last 6 months. The banana plant grew to about 7 feet tall. There are thousands of bananas on the stick.
According to park authorities, some of the bananas at the top of the stick are edible. The bananas below are very small and inedible. The banana of that tree tastes like Champa banana. This type of banana stick is not commonly seen.
Park visitors Kamrul Hasan and Yusuf said, ‘I have never seen such a big banana stick before. A stick holds thousands of bananas. The stick became so big that it touched the ground. Maybe the banana stick would have been bigger if there was room at the bottom. But the bananas below are very small.’
Manpura Park manager Zayed Hasan said, ‘Two years ago a visitor came to the park and gave a banana seedling as a gift. The banana sapling is planted inside the park itself. But the sapling was not taken care of. Already grown up. The tree also bears bananas. The banana stick of the first tree also grew quite large. But not as big as this one. Special care is taken as the current banana plant grows. The weight of the banana stick is tied to two bamboo poles so that the tree does not fall.’
The park manager added, ‘This is the Hazarika banana tree. Many people come from far and wide to the park to see the huge banana stick. Some are taking pictures, some are taking videos. The banana of this tree is a bit sour to eat.’
Gazipur Sadar Upazila Agricultural Officer. Hasibul Hasan said, ‘We visited the scene. There are more than two thousand bananas in that banana stick. I have never seen such a banana stick before. While the upper bananas are edible, the lower bananas are completely inedible. The following are not complete bananas. But we have to wait – what is the condition of the following bananas, how is it. We will report the matter to the Agricultural Research Institute. They will research and see if they can develop new varieties from there.’
