9 tax evasion charges have been filed in the name of US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden. Qatar-based media Al Jazeera said that these complaints were filed against him due to non-payment of 1.4 million dollars related to various taxes.
Federal prosecutors filed these charges in a court in Los Angeles on Thursday local time. According to the indictment, 54-year-old Hunter Biden was involved in a four-year scheme from 2016 to 2019. But he did not pay at least $1.4 million in federal taxes against the scheme. Apart from this, there are allegations against him of not filing taxes on time, false tax returns and tax assessment evasion.
If found guilty, Hunter Biden could face a maximum sentence of 17 years in prison. He is the first child of a sitting president in US history to be criminally indicted.
The cases against Hunter Biden were investigated by David Weiss, special counsel to Attorney General Merrick Garland. Davis was appointed by former President Donald Trump. But even after Joe Biden became president, he is still serving.
British media BBC reported that Hunter Biden was also accused in the firearms case last month. He is accused of providing false information about drug use when purchasing a firearm in October 2018. At the time, Hunter said, he was trying to overcome an addiction to cocaine. But in the mandatory attestation form he wrote that he was not an illegal user and addict of any stimulant, narcotic or any other substance.
Two of the charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years and the other carries a maximum sentence of five years, lawyers say.
