SpaceX is working on a network of spy satellites for US intelligence. Launches imaging equipment into space

SElon Musk’s billion-dollar SpaceX is building hundreds of pioneering satellites for one of the US secret services. In recent years, the company has launched into space several prototypes of these devices designed to take pictures, Reuters wrote today, citing a number of informed sources.

According to the news, the client of Musk’s company is the American National Research Agency (NRO). The $1.8 billion (K$40 billion) NRO contract falls under SpaceX’s Starshield division and shows the close ties between the company and the U.S. security apparatus, according to Reuters.

The existence of the contract was pointed out last month by The Wall Street Journal, which also pointed to the deepening cooperation between SpaceX and American intelligence and military units. He noted that the company has spent time in space with military and secret satellites, but there is not much information available about the work of the Starshield division.

SpaceX concluded the contract with the NRO, which manages the pionn group, in 2021, according to Reuters. If it was enabled, then the program, according to the source, would significantly improve the ability of the government and the United States military to quickly spot potential targets anywhere on the planet, the press agency continues.

According to the government, SpaceX is preparing a powerful system of satellites that could operate in low Earth orbit. Starting in 2020, the company sent a prototype plate into space on Falcon 9 rockets alongside other satellites, said three unnamed sources.

Reuters reports did not find out when the pionn could be fully functional. SpaceX did not respond to questions about the project and the NRO only stated that it strives for the development of sophisticated satellite systems and in this direction also cooperates with private companies.
