The name of Sheikh Michel Al-Ahmed Al-Sabahr (83) has been announced as the new Emir of Kuwait. After the death of Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Affairs Minister Isa Al-Kandari announced the name of the new Emir.

He gave this information in a statement on Saturday. Sheikh Nawaf’s half-brother is Sheikh Michel Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah.

The cause of death of 86-year-old Amir Sheikh Nawaf was not disclosed. He was urgently admitted to the hospital after falling ill last month. Sheikh Nawaf was sick for several years. In 2021, he handed over most of the responsibilities to Sheikh Michel. He was nominated as the next Emir of Kuwait that year.

According to Kuwait’s constitution, Crown Prince Sheikh Michel is sworn in as Emir by the country’s parliament. He will get a maximum time of one year to announce his successor.

Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah became the Emir of Kuwait in September 2020 after the death of his brother Sheikh Sabah after a long stay in power. Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah of Kuwait died three years after coming to power. The country’s state television reported that he died on Saturday. He was 86 years old at the time of his death.

The news agency Reuters says that the cause of death of Kuwait Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah has not yet been announced. He was admitted to the hospital on Friday night as his condition worsened. However, Amir’s physical condition was said to be stable.

Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah served in various important positions in Kuwait for several decades before taking over as Emir. In 1990, Sheikh Nawaf was serving as the defense minister when Iraqi President Saddam Hussein attacked Kuwait. He faced challenges from various armed groups during his tenure as Home Minister.

Meanwhile, 40 days of mourning has been declared in Kuwait following Sheikh Nawaf’s death. Besides, instructions have been given to keep the government offices closed for three days. Leaders of various countries expressed their condolences. A day of national mourning has also been declared in Bangladesh.
