Nazmul Hossain Shantar’s start as Test captain was like a dream. A historic win against New Zealand in Sylhet on red ball leadership debut. As the first Bangladeshi captain, he scored a century on his debut. Shanta saw the other side of the coin in the second match. New Zealand leveled the series by winning the Mirpur Test by 4 wickets.

Mirpur’s ‘variety’ wicket has been the most talked about since the start of the Test. When 15 batsmen of both teams were out on the first day of the match, the question naturally arose, will this Test go to the third day? Thanks to nature’s misbehavior, the match went on well into the fourth day. However, Mirpur has given the shortest match length in Bangladesh as a ball.

Bangladesh and New Zealand batsmen played only 1069 balls in Mirpur Test. Left behind the Test record of 1287 balls against Sri Lanka in 2018. These numbers tell how difficult Mirpur’s wicket is for the batsmen. However, Nazmul Hossain Shanto wants to play on ‘such’ wicket for the Test.

At the press conference after the match, Shanto said that they did not play for improvement, but with the aim of winning in the Test. I came to win.’

If you want to improve in Tests, you have to start with domestic cricket. At least in terms of good wickets, says Shanta, ‘I think it (Tests) is not a place for practice, nor is there anything to improve. In NCL, BCL we will practice on such good wickets or spinning wickets and come to Tests. Come here to win.’

The spinners showed power in the Sylhet test. After that match, the New Zealand captain did not take wickets. However, criticism of Mirpur’s wicket is not new. Allegedly, Bangladesh took advantage by making wickets of their choice. However, the captain of Bangladesh thinks that adequate preparation should be done on such wickets to take full advantage. According to him, tournaments like NCL or BCL can be played on such wickets if needed.

It also came up in captain Shanta’s words, ‘What kind of preparation should be done to win here is important. But such benefits must be taken. I personally feel that when we play first class cricket, we can practice on good wickets or such conditions at that place. I played 2-3 matches on such wickets in NCL. Again took 2-3 such (good) wickets for the away game. ‘

After the Test, Bangladesh will play a 3-match ODI and an equal-match T20 series against New Zealand. Shanta wants sporting wickets to improve in white ball cricket, ‘ODIs or T20Is should always be played on good wickets in the country. If you want to do well in big tournaments or compete with big teams. Be it in the country or outside the country.’

The captain of Bangladesh, who wanted a good wicket in white ball cricket but wanted ‘such’ wicket again in Tests, said, ‘There was a very good wicket in the last BPL. DPL also has good wickets. Even in international matches, if you start playing on good wickets, the white ball game will be different. But Red Ball’s plan is different.’
