The 34th African Cup of Nations is underway in Ivory Coast. Egypt has been the most successful team in the tournament since the start of the tournament. The seven-time title holders are yet to win after playing two matches.
Egypt drew 2-2 against Ghana in their last match. As a result, the team is worried about playing in the knockout stage. Salah’s return to Liverpool has added to the uncertainty surrounding the team’s progress to the next round.
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said ahead of the start of the battle for African supremacy that he wants Egypt to be eliminated quickly. There are many reasons behind such comments. Basically, Liverpool will not get Salah as long as Egypt survives.
Who knew that a comment made just for fun would turn into reality like this. Egypt are already getting Salah, whether they’re out of Afcon or not. Midway through the season, Salah left the national team and returned to Liverpool. But the reason why there is so much interest in getting this forward is not being met by Klopp. The reason for Salah’s return is a muscle injury.
After a 2-2 draw in the first match against Mozambique, Egypt drew the same result against Ghana in the second match, 2-2. Two consecutive draws have made Egypt’s path to the last sixteen difficult. The news of Mohamed Salah’s injury has come in the midst of all this.
According to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), Salah is going to England for treatment. Hopefully if we can go to the semi-finals, then he (Salah) will be back in the Egyptian national team.’
Jurgen Klopp also expressed his desire to send Salah back after the rehabilitation process in Liverpool, “I’m not a doctor, but if Mo (Salah) recovers before the final, I guarantee he will go back to Egypt before the final.”
Egypt is in second place in the group table with two draws in two matches. The record seven-time champions will face Cape Verde, who topped Group ‘B’ on the back of two straight wins, in their last match. Egypt will go directly to the second round if they win that match. Otherwise we have to look at the Ghana-Mozambique match.
