Sadiq Abdullah cannot be elected

Independent candidate of Barisal-5 (Sadar) Constituency Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah was reinstated as a candidate for the 12th National Assembly elections by the High Court’s verdict. But the Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court on Tuesday stayed the proceedings of the High Court judgment declaring his candidature valid. As a result, he will not be able to contest the 12th National Parliament elections, lawyers said.

Judge M. of the Appellate Division heard the appeal against the judgment of the High Court today. The judgment was given by a chamber judge led by Inayetur Rahim.

Senior advocate Md. heard on behalf of Sadiq Abdullah in the court. Khurshid Alam Khan and Advocate Nahid Sultana Juthi. Advocate Ahsanul Karim heard on the other side.

The Election Commission (EC) declared the candidature of independent candidate of Barisal-5 constituency, Sadiq Abdullah, as an independent candidate, due to his dual citizenship.

Later, the High Court declared the decision of the Election Commission invalid by canceling the candidature. As a result, Sadiq Abdullah got his candidature back. Justice Abu Taher Saifur Rahman and Justice Md. Bashir Ullah’s High Court bench rejected the charge of dual citizenship against him and declared him legal.
