In Netrakona, the workers protested against extortion by the traffic police along with disrespectful treatment of CNG-driven autorickshaw workers by blocking the road. In this incident, the district police announced the recall of two traffic police officers and the formation of an investigation committee.
The two accused police officers are Netrakona Traffic Inspector Mridul Ranjan Das and TSI Akbar Hossain.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Netrakona Sadar Circle Shibli Sadiq announced the withdrawal of two traffic police officers and the formation of an investigation committee at around 12:30 pm on Tuesday.
Earlier, autorickshaw workers protested by blocking the road in front of Netrakona municipality from 10:30 am. At this time, the traffic of the entire city was stopped. Common passengers and school-college students suffered due to this.
Later, on behalf of Superintendent of Police Faiz Ahmed, Additional Superintendent of Police Shibli Sadiq went to the protest site and accepted the demands of the workers and announced the withdrawal and investigation committee. After the announcement, the workers lifted their blockade around 1:15 pm.
Billal Hossain, former General Secretary of Netrakona Auto-Tempu and CNG Workers Union, said, ‘Traffic police harasses our CNG drivers in various ways for cases and money when they go out on the road. Traffic Inspector Mridul and TSI Akbar used to torture the workers in various ways if they did not pay the contribution. We repeatedly reported this to the senior police officials but did not get any solution. Traffic torture was increasing day by day. So we have hit the streets today for their withdrawal.’
Accused Mridul Ranjan Das’s mobile phone was not found even after several calls.
Netrakona Sadar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Sibley Sadiq said, we went to the blockade site after hearing the news of labor unrest. Yesterday there was an incident of beating the workers by the traffic police. There is a case in the police station regarding this. Today, the workers suddenly blocked the road in the morning demanding the withdrawal of two traffic police officers. Later, on the instructions of the Superintendent of Police, we announced the formation of an investigation committee along with the withdrawal of two traffic police officers. Later the workers lifted the blockade.
Yesterday, on Monday, in Kurpar area of Netrakona district city, traffic police sub-inspector (SI) Akbar and CNG drivers had a verbal dispute over extortion. Three CNG workers and traffic police officer Akbar Hossain were injured. When the police filed a case in this incident, the workers blocked the road and demanded that the case be withdrawn and the extortion of the traffic police on the road be stopped and the accused officials be withdrawn.
