An Indian female wrestler has retired after being angry with the federation’s election. The country’s most successful wrestler has also returned the Padma Shri. Opposition MP Rahul Gandhi is taking advantage of this. Yesterday, Rahul Gandhi went to Virendra Akhara in Haryana’s Charara village to fight kusti (wrestling in the world of sports).
On December 21, Sanjay Singh was elected as the new president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Sakshi Malik, the Olympic medal winning female wrestler, has retired in protest.
New WFI chief Sanjay has the blessings of BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh. Last January, women wrestlers in India went on strike against Brij Bhushan. The politician accused the then head of the wrestling federation of sexually harassing female wrestlers. He was accused by six wrestlers. However, Sakshi retired in tears as his favorite of the Federation was elected.
Agreeing with that decision, another famous Tokyo Olympic medalist wrestler Bajrang Punia announced to return his Padma Shri medal. Then Priyanka Gandhi went and met Sakshi Malik. Rahul Gandhi has also extended a helping hand to the wrestlers in this movement.
Rahul Gandhi went to Virendra Akhara and got down on the wrestling mat with Punia. However, no hero could do anything. The four-time World Championship medalist lost easily to Punia. He shared those pictures on Twitter himself.
Not winning in wrestling, Rahul’s main objective is to stand by the wrestlers in the ongoing controversy with the federation. In a tweet, Rahul wrote, ‘There is only one question – if these players, the girls of India have to leave their arenas, take to the streets to get their rights and justice, then who will ask their children to come to this game? All of them are simple, straightforward people from peasant families. Let them represent their country. Give us a chance to make India proud with honor and respect.’ On behalf of the Congress, BJP has been poked and tweeted about this.
Apart from Bajrang, Deepak Punia was also present at Virendra Akhara. Deepak, who won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, said, ‘He came to see what the day-to-day life of a wrestler is like. Wrestled with me. ‘
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Sports temporarily banned the new committee of the Wrestling Federation last Sunday. Another Olympian Vinesh Phogat also returned his Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award to stand by the Puniyas.
