Current President Vladimir Putin has announced his candidacy for the 2024 Russian presidential election. He made the announcement on Friday, Russian news agency Tass reported. If he wins this election, he will get a chance to stay in power till 2030.
According to the Reuters news agency, Boris Yetsin handed over the power of the president to Putin on the last day of the year in 1999. Since then he has been sitting in the Russian parliament. No other Russian ruler has been in power for so long since Joseph Stalin.
Vladimir Putin attended an award ceremony on Friday. Several soldiers were awarded gold medals for bravery in the Ukraine-Russia war. At the event, an army officer asked Putin whether he would contest the next election. Putin said he will contest the election.
However, in a report about Putin last month, Reuters reported such information. Putin turned 71 on October 7. It is believed that he will win the next election and remain in power. However, opponents have always termed him as ‘enemy of democracy’.
Before this, the date of the presidential election in Russia was announced on Thursday. According to the upper house of the Russian parliament, presidential elections will be held in the country on March 17, 2024.
Valentina Matvienko, the head of the upper house of the Russian Parliament, said that the senators unanimously approved this date for the presidential election.
