Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep grief and sorrow over the casualties caused by the devastating earthquake in a remote village in China’s northwestern Gansu province. In a letter written to Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, he expressed deep grief and sincere condolences on behalf of the people and government of Bangladesh.
In a condolence message, the Prime Minister said, “I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the loss of many lives and the loss of property and homes of the public as a result of a devastating earthquake in China’s Gansu Province.” As a long-time friend of China, the people and government of Bangladesh also express their sincere sympathy for the suffering of the friendly Chinese people in this natural disaster. My deepest condolences to you, as well as prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.
At least 111 people died and more than 200 were injured in an earthquake in northwestern China on Monday.
According to USGS, the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9 on the Richter scale. However, Chinese authorities say the magnitude was 6.2.
