President Md. Sahabuddin and his wife Dr. Rebecca Sultana hosted a reception at Bangabhaban today on the occasion of Great Victory Day. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana attended the reception organized on the green lawn of Banga Bhavan on the occasion of Bangladesh’s 53rd Victory Day.
From 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm on Saturday, among thousands of invited guests, Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan, Cabinet members, Advisory Council, Diplomats of various countries, Supreme Court judges, Chiefs of three armed forces, Members of Parliament, Senior Political leaders, educationists, business community leaders, artists, brave freedom fighters, families of Vir Shrestha Gallantry Award recipients and eminent citizens were present.
Civil and military officials as well as newspaper editors and journalist leaders also attended the reception.
President Md Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina cut a cake on the occasion. They exchanged greetings with the injured freedom fighters, dignitaries and guests.
Fifty two years ago Bangladesh was born as an independent country under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The new state of Bangladesh has been achieved in exchange for the supreme sacrifice of three million martyrs and the honor of two lakh mothers and sisters.
On this day in 1971, the Pakistani occupation forces surrendered to the joint forces of Bangladesh and India. East Pakistan became Bangladesh, ending a bloody nine-month liberation war.
