Marufa Akhtar Popi, a member of the Central Executive Committee of Awami League, lost her post from Jamalpur district Awami League by posting a status on Bangladesh Awami League’s organizing secretary Mirza Azam and his family on social media Facebook. When a letter was sent to him asking for an explanation of that post, he was dismissed from the party post by the district Awami League for showing contempt by not replying to the letter.
The matter was confirmed to the media in a letter signed by District Awami League General Secretary Bijan Kumar Chand on Sunday (December 17) around 10:30 pm.
Marufa Akhtar Popi was a member of Jamalpur District Awami League and Acting President of Bangladesh Chhatra League. He is also serving as an executive member of Bangladesh Awami League.
It is said in the letter, ‘The meeting unanimously decided to issue you a letter asking for an explanation with 7 (seven) working days along with censure proposal for your such behavior and rude, indecent speech. At the same time, if the explanation submitted by you is not satisfactory, the decision is taken to exempt you from the membership of Bangladesh Awami League Jamalpur District Branch.
“Even though the appointed time has passed, it is a matter of great sadness and regret that you (Mr. Marufa Akhtar Popi) have shown disrespect to the Jamalpur District Awami League by not responding to the letter of the District Awami League and have broken the discipline, as per the provisions stated in Section 09 of Article 47 of the Constitution, you have been removed from the Jamalpur District Branch. Exempted from membership.’
In this regard, Awami League leader Marufa Akhtar Popi said on the phone, ‘I am a member of Central Awami League. I can also work at the grassroots level. It will not interfere with my work.’
In this context, District Awami League General Secretary Bijan Kumar Chand said, “He has been dismissed as a member of the Jamalpur district branch as per the provisions of the constitution for showing disrespect to the district Awami League.”
It is to be noted that Marufa Akhtar Popi posted a status on social media Facebook about Bangladesh Awami League organizing secretary Mirza Azam MP, his late father and family.
In a letter signed by District Awami League General Secretary Bijan Kumar Chand on November 25, Awami League leader Marufa Akhtar Popi was asked to explain the statement and Facebook statuses within seven (7) working days. He did not provide any explanation of that letter.
