The plan to cut the railway line in Gazipur is under the leadership of BNP leader Hasan Ajmal Bhuiya, councilor of the city corporation. He made this plan with a few leaders and workers of the party’s district and metropolis at his home in Joydevpur. The police gave this information after arresting 7 people involved in the incident. The police also said that they confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation.
Miscreants cut a 20-feet section of the railway line in Bankharia area of Gazipur in the early hours of December 13. One person was killed and at least 10 people were injured after 7 coaches of Mohanganj Express derailed.
The police investigation revealed the names of 8 people including the councilor of ward number 28 of Gazipur City Corporation, BNP leader Hasan Ajmal Bhuiyan. 7 people were arrested in various places including the capital.
According to the police, Councilor Ajmal planned this sabotage in his residence on the night of December 11 with a meeting with some leaders and activists of the district and metropolitan BNP.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mahbub Alam gave details of the incident in a press conference on Sunday afternoon. He said, ‘Last December 11, they had a secret meeting at different places including the house of Ward 28 councilor and former BNP leader Ajmal Bhuiyan. Decisions and plans were made there to sabotage railway lines. It was discussed in the meeting that there is pressure to do something big from the top level of the party, if any big incident happens there will be a stir in the country and abroad so they plan to sabotage the railway line. On December 13, sabotage was carried out on the Dhaka-Mymensingh railway road with the aim of debating the current election activities of the government and spreading fear among the public. The microbus used in this incident has been recovered.
As per plan, BNP workers Jannatul Islam and Mehdi Hasan rented a car from Konabari area on 12th December. After that, he gathered various tools and went to the spot with a few associates. Later, between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m., everyone escaped by cutting the railway line.
Commissioner Mahbub Alam also said that a car was hired from Konabari after the evening of December 12 to go to Dhaka. But instead of going to Dhaka, they took a rented car and went out with the intention of cutting the railway line and causing sabotage. They picked up several people from various places including Shivbari, Jhor Pukurpar and other places. Railway cutting machinery from Ibn Sinha Tohar’s house in Jor Pukurpar of Gazipur Sadar police station and two gas cylinders from Bash Bagan restaurant rented by Usman Gani in Dakshin Salna. Later two more persons were picked up in the car from Shivbari intersection. At around 1.30 am, the vandals left the car near the forest, 4-5 km away from the incident site in Bankharia area and went to the side of Bankharia Chinai Railway Bridge with gas cylinders and other materials on foot. They saw the opportunity there and cut the 20 feet railway line between 3 and 4 in the morning.’
In this regard, the driver Saiful said, ‘They hired a car and took it to Shimultali area with gas cylinders. There, 8 people left the car next to the forest on the narrow road. After some hours they came back and got into the car. Later, some of them went down near Dhaka Medical College and four in Mirpur area.’
Gazipur district administration and railway authorities filed two cases in this incident on December 14.
BNP has been giving programs like hartal-blockade to demand elections under non-partisan neutral government. In the meantime, there are reports of various types of vandalism including fire in buses and trains.
