Rajat Patidar is having a good time. A batsman from Madhya Pradesh was playing for India against England Lions in Ahmedabad. His bat is regularly smiling in first-class cricket. He played an innings of 151 runs off 158 balls in the first match of the series against the Lions.

Besides, he scored 111 runs in the preparation match. 30-year-old Patidar has benefited from the floods. He has been called up for the Test series against England. Patidar will join Rohit Sharma today.

England has already arrived in India to play a five-match Test series. The two teams will play the first Test of the series in Hyderabad tomorrow, Thursday. One of India’s batting hopes, Virat Kohli, will not play in the first two matches of this series due to personal reasons. 35-year-old Kohli is expected to play the last three matches of the series. India, however, announced the squad for the first two Tests against the English.

There is no specialist reserve batsman in the Indian team to fill Kohli’s place in the first two Tests. Indian head coach Rahul Dravid has confirmed that either of Srikar Bharat and Dhruv Jurel will get a place in the XI. So Patidar’s forehead opens.

Patidar was called up to the national team before this. But that is in 50 over cricket. He played the only ODI in his career in December last year. He got out with only 22 runs in that match. Patidar has been running consistently in first class cricket in recent times. He scored 4000 runs in 55 matches at an average of 45.97. There are 12 centuries and 22 half-centuries in first class.

Indian cricket circles have raised questions about Patidar’s call-up to the national team. Asked why an experienced batsman was taken instead of Kohli, captain Rohit Sharma said it was a process of giving opportunities to tested players.

Ahead of the first Test, Rohit said, ‘We thought about it (calling someone experienced). But the talk is, when will these young players get a chance?’

The decision not to keep experienced players was not an easy one, it also came out in the words of the Indian captain, ‘The decision not to keep experienced players in the team or not to consider them is very difficult. Because they have a wealth of experience, they have scored a lot of runs and won a lot of matches. This makes it very difficult to ignore them. But even then, sometimes some players have to be brought into the team and given the opportunity to play in the places they like.’

Rohit also said, ‘You don’t want to see those who don’t have previous experience (in the national team) in the overseas tour team. But I’m trying. Whenever I got a chance, I tried to give these young stars a chance.’
