Passengers of Bangladesh on international air routes have increased by more than 13% in one year. Cargo transportation has also increased by almost 60 percent. According to the prediction of the aircraft manufacturer Boeing, the movement of Bangladeshis by air will double in the next 10 years. However, the airport authorities are struggling to manage passengers without increasing the facilities. However, once the third terminal is fully operational, passenger services will increase, they say.
A few years ago there was more movement of expatriates by air. But now the demand for airspace has increased for education, medical, business as well as travel.
The information of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport says that compared to last year, passengers have increased by 10 lakh 19 thousand only on international routes till December 9 of this year. The total number of passengers in the previous year was 78 lakh 28 thousand. The number of flights also increased by 6 thousand 139.
Apart from this, cargo transportation increased by 60 percent to 3 lakh 43 thousand 643 tons this year.
Babychak chairman M Mofidur Rahman said, ‘Due to the increase in trade between different countries, air passengers are increasing. However, when the third terminal is opened, the facilities will increase. We are trying to increase facilities at other airports.’
Experts say, according to the forecast of the International Aviation Organization, the number of passengers in Bangladesh will double by air. Therefore, the facilities of the airport should be increased from now on.
Aviation expert Kazi Wahidul Alam said, ‘Our air travel is increasing. So we have to prepare for the future from now. That’s why we need to make a new aero city and make an airport.’
Despite the increase in international routes, domestic routes have decreased by 362,246 passengers this year. Aviation people think that passengers may decrease due to political unrest.
