On Tuesday, the Office of the Commissioner for Children organized a round table on the topic of regulating mobile phones in schools. “Even the most recent round table is proof that the professional community has different opinions and does not hesitate to discuss them. Our effort is to protect and support the healthy development of our children,” said Commissioner for Children Jozef Mikloško.

According to him, it is encouraging to see how different professional groups are actively involved in a broad discussion about the ratio of advantages and disadvantages of using mobile phones by schoolchildren. “We invited experts from the academic community, as well as from abroad, so that we could convey scientific arguments to the public. The round table was also attended by representatives of the ministry, competent authorities, organizations representing teachers, parents, as well as representatives of youth parliaments,” he pointed out.

In addition to the topic of the harmfulness of mobile phones, they also opened a discussion about the risks brought by artificial intelligence. They also opened the question of what to replace mobile phones with. “It is a question that requires thoughtful and innovative solutions, in which we can involve not only the pedagogical community, but also the cultural community,” he added. According to him, the outputs of experts repeatedly confirm that prevention must be addressed already at the level of parents and families.

Currently, it is within the competence of schools to set a ban or the possibility of using mobile phones. The Minister of Education, Research, Development and Youth Tomáš Drucker announced that mobile phones could be banned in the first grade of primary schools. At the second level, their use could be limited. The department is communicating with experts on this matter.
