The Election Commission has declared the nomination papers of independent candidate Md. Joynal Abedin in Nilphamari-2 (Sadar) seat as valid in the appeal hearing. His nomination was declared valid at the appeal hearing at the Election Commission building in Agargaon, capital, on Sunday (December 10).
Independent candidate Zainal Abedin confirmed the matter and said, ‘On appeal, I got my candidature back as the nomination paper was valid. If the elections are free and fair, I will win with huge votes. The people are on my side.’
Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Ghosh canceled Zainal Abedin’s nomination paper citing complication of 1 percent voter’s support signature in the conference room of Nilphamari District Commissioner’s office on December 3. Later he appealed to the Election Commission as per rules.
Nominations of Awami League nominated candidate and current member of Parliament Asaduzzaman Noor, Jatiya Party candidate Shahjahan Chowdhury, Zaker Party’s Abu Saeed and Bangladesh Congress’s Morsalin Islam were declared valid.
Incidentally, from 1992 to 2001, the general secretary of Nilphamari District Awami League was the brave freedom fighter Zainal Abedin. In the 1996 national election, he was nominated for the boat symbol. He lost by 443 votes. In the 2001 national election, he left the Awami League and joined the National Party. Later he also resigned from the National Party.
Brave freedom fighter Zainal Abedin was elected chairman of Nilphamari Sadar Upazila Parishad twice in 1986 and 2009. After that, he was elected as the chairman of Nilphamari Zilla Parishad as an independent candidate in 2016. Later, the government appointed him as the administrator of Zilla Parishad.
