A female New Zealand MP has resigned after being accused of shoplifting multiple times. He is the Golridge Gahraman of the Green Party. He has been accused of stealing three times from two clothing stores. One in Auckland, another in Wellington. Police are investigating the allegations against Golridge.
According to the BBC report, a CCTV footage of Golridge’s theft has come to light. The footage shows him stealing a handbag from a boutique shop in Auckland. This MP announced his resignation on Tuesday after the video came to light.
42-year-old Golridge claimed that he did this out of stress. He said, ‘No one expects such behavior from a public representative. I am sorry for this act.’
Golriz Gahraman was born in Iran. He moved to New Zealand with his parents when he was young. They got political asylum and later citizenship in the country. In 2017, Golridge made history by being elected the country’s first refugee member of parliament. Before that, he was a UN human rights lawyer.
In response to Golridge’s resignation, Green Party leader James Shaw said, ‘Since being elected to Parliament, Golridge has been receiving threats of sexual violence, physical violence and death. He may have done such work due to mental stress. But this incident should be investigated.’
Ever since he was elected as an MP in 2017, he had been receiving threats from white extremists. He recently came under renewed criticism for his support of pro-Palestinian protests.
