Russian opposition leader and staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin, Alexei Navalny, has disappeared from prison. His lawyers said that they tried to contact him for 6 days but failed. The American media CNN reported this information about them in a report on Monday.
Lawyers do not know where Navalny is now. But he was eventually placed in the IK-6 Penal Colony, which is known for its brutality against inmates. Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison last August on charges including incitement to extremism.
News of the 47-year-old Navalny’s disappearance comes as Vladimir Putin has announced his candidacy for the next presidential election. Elections are scheduled to be held in March 2024.
Before this, in 2020, an attempt was made to kill Navalny by using toxic chemicals in Serbia. When he fell ill, he was taken to Germany for treatment. After a long treatment there, Navalny was arrested at the airport when he returned home last year.
He has denied all the allegations against him. Navalny and his supporters have been claiming these allegations are false. Meanwhile, the Russian administration has declared Navalny and his party leaders as extremists.
