National Expatriate Day Celebration in Hong Kong

Bangladesh Consulate General, Hong Kong celebrated for the first time “National Expatriate Day-2023” by celebrating special consular service week including giving remittance awards and honors to expatriate Bangladeshis. The day was divided into two parts on 21 December and 31 December 2023 for the convenience of expatriate Bangladeshis and Bangladeshi women workers in Hong Kong.

This information was given in a press release sent on December 31.

On December 21, 2023, consulate officials, members of the Bangladeshi community in Hong Kong, members of the executive committee of the Bangladesh Association of Hong Kong were present at the ceremony held at the consulate premises. The main event begins with recitation from the Holy Quran and reading of the Holy Gita. First Secretary (Labour) Zahidur Rahman presided over the event and Consul General Israt Ara presided over the event.

On the occasion of the day, the Consul General presented remittance awards and honors to three expatriate Bangladeshis from Hong Kong who sent the highest remittance to Bangladesh legally in the financial year 2022-23. He then announced the auspicious inauguration of the Special Consular Service Week from 30 December 2023 to 5 January 2024.

Apart from expressing gratitude to the government, the awardees also expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the award given by the consulate to legitimate remittance senders.

On this occasion, the Consul General in his speech recognized the outstanding contribution of expatriates and highlighted the issue of declaring December 30 as ‘National Expatriate Day’ and discussed various government initiatives to protect the interests of expatriate Bangladeshis under the leadership of the Prime Minister, the daughter of the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Emphasizing the contribution of expatriates to the socio-economic development of Bangladesh, he encouraged expatriates in Hong Kong to send remittances through legitimate channels and to register in the ‘Expatriate Scheme’ under the ‘Universal Pension Scheme’.

Besides, on the occasion of “National Expatriate Day”, another program was organized for Bangladeshi women workers and remittance fighters working in Hong Kong today on 31 December 2023. Since it was a holiday for Bangladeshi women workers on Sunday, about a hundred workers and several employers were also present. The ceremony started with the reading of the holy scriptures. Messages sent by the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Minister of Expatriate Welfare and Foreign Employment were read out on the occasion of National Expatriate Day. Then a special documentary film was shown on this occasion.

Later, Consul General Israt Ara presented the “Remittance Award and Honors-2023” to ten women workers who sent the highest remittances to Bangladesh through legal means in the fiscal year 2022-23. The honorees expressed special gratitude to the Government of Bangladesh for the decision to celebrate the first ever National Expatriate Day and applauded the initiative of the Bangladesh Consulate to provide “Remittance Awards and Honors” since 2022. In his speech, the Consul General thanked the women workers living in Hong Kong for playing an important role in the economy of Bangladesh by sending their hard-earned money to the country legally. He assured them of maximum cooperation in protecting the interests and rights of the workers as well as considering the proposal to increase the facilities. Besides, he called for the continuation of sending remittances and registration in Prabus Pension Scheme, a groundbreaking step of the Bangladesh government for their future welfare.

On the occasion of “National Expatriate Day”, the event concluded with a delightful cultural program and lunch with the participation of expatriate workers. At the end of the event, remittances were sent through legal channels and leaflets related to ‘Prabas Scheme’ were distributed among the employees.
