‘Consistent’ Sylhet Strikers surprise in BPL this time. The team lost the first four matches. Today Chittagong lost against Challengers by 8 wickets with 14 balls left in the match.
The franchise relying on Mashrafe Bin Mortaza was hoping that their fortunes would change when they went to the home ground in Sylhet after two defeats in the Dhaka phase. There is the same scenario, after losing their third match, Sylhet failed despite their determination to turn around against the Challengers.
In the fourth match, Sylhet’s luck of the toss went in their favor, looking for their first win. However, the strikers batsmen seemed to have forgotten the T20 format of the game after coming down to bat. Sylhet scored 120 and 78 runs in the previous two matches and scored 138 runs today. Chasing, Tanjid Hasan Tamim and New Zealand’s batsman Tom Bruce played together and Chittagong won by a landslide. Chittagong is now at the top of BPL points.
Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mohammad Mithun, the unsuccessful opening pair of Sylhet in the first three matches, were still in their old form today. As always, the two openers of the Strikers returned to the dressing room in the power play. After adding 8 runs in the first two overs, Shanto-Mithun took the way to the pavilion off Bilal Khan.
Zakir Hasan and Irish batsman Harry Tector led the team in the third wicket partnership. But these two seem to have forgotten that they are playing T20. Playing in ODI mood, Zakir-Tactor duo completed the team’s half-century in the ninth over.
After the time out at the end of the ninth over, it seemed that the two would bat in an aggressive mood. But Zakir couldn’t do it anymore. Zakir scored 31 runs off 26 balls before returning with a catch at mid-on off Challengers spinner Nahiduzzaman. In the third wicket partnership, Zimbabwean Ryan Barle started to follow his teammate Zakir as he came down to the crease.
Barl continued to advance the pace of runs in the ODI mood with the tractor. From the 11th over to the 16th over, the pair added 40 runs off 35 balls. Taking an aggressive mood in the 17th over, Tector walked into the path of his teammate Zakir. He scored 45 runs off 42 balls before returning to Sajghar off Bilal Khan.
Barl and Ariful could not increase the run rate despite trying at the end. Sylhet scored 137 runs after losing 4 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Oman star pacer Bilal Khan took 3 wickets for Chittagong.
Chasing the target, the Lankan opener Aviska Fernando was beaten by Chittagong in the power play, but the pair of Tanjid Tamim and Bruce scored 46 runs. They did not let the Sylhet bowlers take control at the end of the power play. Opener Tamim picked up the first fifty of this year’s BPL by riding on the strikers bowlers. With Bruce, Tamim created a pair of 89 runs and made the team afraid of victory. This left-handed batsman returned to Sajghar after scoring 50 runs off 40 balls. By that time, Chittagong reached the threshold of victory.
In the end, Kiwi batsman Tom Bruce ensured the big victory of Challengers’ wicket with Shahadat Hossain Dipu before the ball. Chittagong is at the top of all with 8 points in such a strong victory. On the other hand, Mashrafe’s Sylhet is at the bottom with four consecutive losses.
