Major Hafiz is in jail

BNP Vice Chairman Major (retd.) convicted in the case of Gulshan police station in the capital. The court ordered Hafiz Uddin Ahmed to be sent to jail after denying bail.

Hafiz surrendered and applied for bail in Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury’s court on Tuesday. After the hearing, the court denied him bail and sent him to prison.

Earlier on December 14, Hafiz Uddin left Shahjalal Airport on an Air India flight around 2.30 pm for knee surgery. On December 28, the court sentenced him to 21 months imprisonment while undergoing treatment in India. Besides, the court sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment without paying a fine of 5 thousand taka. Later on March 3, he returned home after receiving treatment in India.

According to the complaint of the case, on June 4, 2011, Hafiz obstructed the police from illegal assembly on the road in front of the Mohakhali Wireless Gate water tank of Gulshan police station and attacked them. They vandalized and set fire to cars moving on the road. After investigating the case on April 29, 2014, Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Kamrul Hasan Talukder submitted the charge sheet to the court.

On April 25, 2022, he framed charges against the accused and ordered the trial to begin. During the trial of the case, the court heard the testimony of 7 out of 12 witnesses. After presenting arguments on December 24, the court fixed December 28 as the day to announce the verdict.
