Facebook is the most popular social media platform in the world. Facebook started its journey 20 years ago today. At first Facebook use was limited to Harvard University students. It later expanded to other colleges in the city of Boston, the Ivy League and Stanford University. Later it was opened to all universities, colleges, schools and adults aged 13 and over. Facebook is now the world’s most popular social media platform with three billion monthly active users. More than half of the world’s total internet users use Facebook.
On February 4, 2004, 19-year-old Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates launched this social network called TheFacebook at Harvard University. As such, yesterday was Facebook’s birthday. On this occasion, Zuckerberg shared a post expressing happiness and good wishes on his profile. There he shared a picture of his Facebook account from 20 years ago.
This is not new to those who opened a Facebook account between 2004 and 2011. But those who have joined Facebook since 2012 may be a bit surprised. In the beginning, Facebook only had some information about itself and the option to make friends. A total of one photo could be uploaded as a profile picture. The platform did not even have a news feed or timeline at that time. And the issue of live may not have come to many people’s thoughts.
Despite this, Facebook gained one million users in its first year. In August 2005, the platform was renamed Facebook.com. By the end of 2006, anyone above the age of 13 could join the platform. From 2006 to 2007, the number of users increased to 50 million. And by the end of 2008, it doubled to 100 million. In 2012, Facebook reached one billion users. And its value stands at 104 billion dollars.
On October 29, 2021, Zuckerberg re-introduced Facebook. Its parent company is Meta Platforms, Inc. Its portfolio includes Facebook, Instagram, Threads, WhatsApp and other services. Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth is now $120 billion.
