Last day for withdrawal of candidature is today, monday symbol allotment

Sunday is the last day to withdraw the candidature of valid candidates in the 12th National Parliament election. Candidacy can be withdrawn by applying to the Returning Officer during office hours. And the Election Commission will allocate symbols tomorrow, Monday. After that the campaign will start.

On November 15, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal announced the schedule for the National Assembly elections. According to the schedule, the last date for filing nomination papers was November 30. Till that day, 2 thousand 716 people submitted nomination papers in 300 seats of the country. Their nomination papers were scrutinized from December 1 to 4 by the concerned returning officers.

Election Commissioner (EC) Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said that 2 thousand 716 nomination papers were filed in 300 seats. Of these, 731 were canceled by the returning officers during selection. There were 1 thousand 985 valid candidates. 35 appeals were filed against acceptance of nomination papers by the Returning Officer. And there were 525 appeals against cancellation. A total of 560 appeal hearings lasted 6 days. At this time, 280 candidates were returned. And 5 legitimate candidates lost their candidature due to appeal.

Finally, excluding the five candidates who were canceled in the appeal and adding the 280 who returned, the number of valid candidates in this election stands at 2,260.

As per the announced schedule, last date for withdrawal of candidature is 17th December and allotment of symbols is 18th December. The campaign will start from December 18 to January 5 at 8 am. Voting will be held on January 7, 2024.
