The Israeli military has started pouring sea salt water into the tunnels of Hamas fighters in Gaza, Palestine. They may continue this process for the next few weeks. The Wall Street Journal reported this information citing US officials. However, the influential American media did not reveal the names of those officials.
U.S. officials said the Israeli military believed Hamas fighters were hiding inside the tunnels and that they were hiding hostages and ammunition there. So they want to destroy the tunnel. And for this purpose, the Israeli army has started to enter the sea water inside the tunnel.
But several US officials have expressed concern that if Israeli forces continue the process, Gaza’s clean water supply will be at risk.
Meanwhile, the Reuters news agency reported that they did not respond to requests for comment from the Israeli army regarding the salt water attack on Hamas tunnels. A spokesman for Israel’s Defense Ministry also declined to comment.
Last month, Israeli forces installed five giant pumps in the Gaza Strip to pump water into Hamas tunnels. Thousands of cubic meters of water can be pumped into the tunnel from each of these pumps.
Earlier in 2015, Egypt pumped water into the tunnel between Gaza and the Sinai Peninsula in a similar process. This inundation with saline water causes severe damage to the soil in the area and the possibility of growing crops ends there.
Meanwhile, military experts say that the Israeli forces will not win if the Hamas tunnels are flooded with sea salt water. Since the nature and structure of the tunnels are still unknown and it will take time to flood the tunnels, Hamas fighters will have an easy opportunity to move hostages and ammunition elsewhere.
About 18,000 Palestinians have been killed and 49,500 injured in Israeli bombardment since October 7. Since the beginning of the war, Hamas attacks have killed approximately 1,200 people in Israel.
