Iran deploys warships in Red Sea amid tension in Israel-Hamas war. A warship of the country ‘Alborj’ entered the Red Sea yesterday through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported this information with reference to the Iranian news agency Tasnim.

However, Tasnim news agency did not specify what time the ship entered the Red Sea yesterday. Unconfirmed sources on social media said that the Iranian warship entered the Red Sea early Saturday morning.

Iran’s Press TV reported that the Iranian warship that entered the Red Sea was of the ‘Alvand’ type. It is part of the 34th Fleet of the Iranian Navy. The warship patrolled the Gulf of Aden, the northern Indian Ocean and the Bab el-Mandab Strait until 2015.

Tasnim news agency did not give details about the purpose of sending the Alborz warship to the Red Sea. However, the news agency said, since 2009, several Iranian warships have been deployed in the Red Sea for anti-piracy and other tasks.

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7 last year, the Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi group has been attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea with the support of Hamas. In view of these attacks, the United States and allied Arab countries formed a security alliance in the Red Sea last December.
