Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, who is out of the national team, believes that the lack of skill of the players was the main factor behind India’s loss by an innings in the first Test of the series in South Africa.

India were hoping to win a Test series for the first time in South Africa. But the first match of the two-match series was lost by an innings and a margin of 32 runs.

Since 1992, India have lost seven of the eight series they have played so far. They managed to draw the other series.

In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Karthik said that the lack of skilled cricketers in the team is the reason for such a loss. India did not include Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. But the inability of the middle order to survive in the first Test was the most noticeable. The match was completed in three days in pace friendly conditions. India scored only 376 runs in two innings.

In this regard, Karthik said, ‘I don’t think it’s just about being unprepared for the red ball. But I will also talk about the lack of skills. The current Indian team has huge gaps in some places. The biggest weaknesses seem to be third and fourth pacers and middle order batting. We are not used to seeing an India team like this and it does not go with the heights they have taken themselves to over the years.’

Centurion starred Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna. Both of them got two wickets with 194 runs in 39 overs.
