There have been allegations of threats to supporters of independent candidates of Shariatpur-2 (Naria-Sakhipur) constituency. Independent candidate Awami Jubo League presidium member Khaled Shawkat Ali made this complaint to the Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer on Thursday.

It is said in the complaint that on Wednesday afternoon, four women supporters of an independent candidate went to campaign in Baisakhi Para of Ward No. 1 of Nadia Municipality. At that time, supporters of boat candidate Water Resources Deputy Minister and Member of Parliament AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, including Mustafa Sikder, Suman Sikder and others created obstacles in their campaign. Apart from this, he was forced to leave the area by verbally abusing and threatening.

On the other hand, at around 10:30 pm, the supporters of the independent candidate put up posters in Gharisar Bazaar area of ‚Äč‚ÄčNaria Upazila, and some supporters of the boat, Akash Dhali, Farhan Shikder, Rahul Mollah and others, tore it down. Two such complaints were made by independent candidates to the District Returning Officer.

Independent candidate Khaled Shaukat Ali said, ‘When my supporters put up posters with ties when they campaign, the posters are torn by the boatmen. Not only that, the supporters have been threatened with breaking their arms and legs if they campaign again. So I made two complaints to the District Returning Officer.

However, Awami League (Boat) candidate’s election management committee coordinator Abul Kalam Azad, mayor of Nadia municipality said, ‘Boat supporters are not involved in such activities. Independent candidates and their supporters are constantly doing these things to discredit the boat candidate.’

In this regard, Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Mohammad Nizam Uddin Ahmed said, ‘I have received many complaints from independent candidates. If threatened, legal action has been taken. And regarding the violation of the code of conduct, the responsible officials in the concerned upazila have been asked to investigate.
