Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has banned all types of fireworks, crackers, lanterns and torch processions for an indefinite period ‘in order to complete the Christmas and English New Year thirty-first night in a festive and safe environment’. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman issued this order in a circular on Monday.
The notification said, ‘Since next December 25 is the main religious festival of Christians, Happy Christmas and English New Year’s Eve, from December 31, city residents will spontaneously participate in various joyous festivals in different areas of Dhaka city. In the name of celebrating this joyous festival, some rowdy people indulge in activities against their own culture, values and traditions.’
“Therefore, I, DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, under the powers conferred by Section 28 and 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance (Ordinance No. III/76) from 12 midnight (December 18) for an indefinite period to complete the Merry Christmas and English New Year celebrations in a festive and safe environment, all I declare that all kinds of fireworks, bursting crackers, flying lanterns and torch processions are prohibited. DMP Commissioner added in the notification.
The notification also mentioned that this order will remain in force till further orders.
