In the post-election violence in Shariatpur’s Naria, supporters of boat and eagle symbols have been accused of attacking and vandalizing the houses of opposition supporters. The attack and vandalism took place in the Nayan Madbarkandi area of ‚Äč‚ÄčMoktarchar union on Saturday morning.

The victim’s family has filed two separate cases in the Naria police station. The police arrested 4 people for their involvement in the attack and vandalism. Additional police have been deployed in the area for fear of further violence.

According to police and locals, a dispute arose between Delwar Khan (42) and local UP member Kalam Khan (35) around the 12th National Assembly elections. Kalam campaigned for Boat and Delwar Eagle. AKM Enamul Haque Shamim won the election with the boat symbol. Independent candidate Jubo League presidium member Khaled Shawkat Ali was defeated.

Supporters of the two sides clashed on Friday evening. Because of this, the Eagle supporters first attacked the house of Kalam Khan, the boat supporter, in the early hours of Saturday. Injured Ayesha Delwar Khan’s wife.

Delwar Khan’s mother Feroza Begum said, ‘My son was a supporter of Eagle Marker in the election. Kalam Khan was a boatman. They are attacking our house with people because they are passing the election. Breaking everything in the house. We want justice for this.’

Bhulu Begum, sister of Delwar Khan, said, “When my sister tried to stop them, Kalam Khan’s people broke her hand. They entered the house and broke the furniture. They broke the cupboard and looted one lakh rupees and gold ornaments. We want justice for this incident.’

However, UP member Kalam Khan’s brother’s wife Irene Begum said, ‘Delwar Khan and his men attacked our house because we did not vote for the eagle symbol in the election. The lock of the house was broken and the TV and fridge were destroyed. We want a fair trial.’

Naria Circle Additional Superintendent of Police. Ahsan Habib said, ‘There have been two separate cases of counter-attacks by both sides. 4 people have been arrested in this incident. Police are working to nab the rest of the accused. Sufficient police have been deployed at the spot.’
