If you survive, you’ll be scarred. What is the FAB-1500 bomb that tipped the balance on the front in favor of the Russians

Rusko in Ukraine started using crushing aerial bombs, against which the Ukrainian defense is hardly able to protect itself. The FAB-1500 gliding bomb decimated Ukrainian forces and tipped the balance on the hundreds of kilometers of front line that stretches from the south to the northeast of Ukraine, the CNN server writes.

The bomb comes from classic cougars from the days of the Soviet Union and according to CNN it is now Mask in a factory near Moscow, he converts it into a cheap but effective version of the missile.

“It’s not a cheap and quick conversion, but it’s fundamentally cheaper than the millions of dollars that missiles cost. It’s a pittance compared to missiles,” Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat told CNN.

The one-and-a-half-ton bomb is dropped by fighter jets from a distance of 60 to 70 kilometers, i.e. beyond the reach of Ukrainian air defense systems. According to CNN, the power of these bombs is illustrated by recent videos from the battle line in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, where Russia used them on thermal power plants, factories or apartment buildings that Ukrainians use to coordinate their defenses.

Russian military bloggers started talking about the new type of ammunition last September, when Moscow was testing its accuracy.

“For many, Russian tactical aircraft offer a new and much more devastating ambush option because, among other things, pilots can stay away from enemy defenses,” said Joseph Trevithick of the specialist website TheWarZone.

“Before, they only shelled us with artillery. Now (the Russians) are attacking the city more aggressively and have started using the air force, especially the FAB-1500,” one of the soldiers of Ukraine’s 46th Independent Airmobile Brigade, which is deployed in the city of Krasnohorivka, told CNN last week. “Why are they using the FAB-1500? Because it causes serious damage. If you survive it, you’ll have scars,” said the soldier, who said it was hurting the morale of the Ukrainian armed forces.

The use of the FAB-1500 became a decisive element of the Russian offensive in the Donetsk region, especially in the destruction of Ukrainian defenses in and around Avdijivka. The city, which is completely devastated, fell into the hands of Russian troops in February.

“On the eve of the battle for Avdijivka and during it, hundreds of aerial bombs were detonated within a few days. In the direction of Avdijivka alone, 250 of them were used within 48 hours,” said Ihnat.
